New York City:

The Guggenheim Museum

The Guggenheim Museum

Another museum attractive to tourists is located in the Museum Mile – the Guggenheim Museum leaves tourists speechless on daily basis. Magnificent architecture, unique style and location makes the Guggenheim astonishing. Built with white concrete in circular shape, it perfectly fits in Fifth Avenue.

The Guggenheim Foundation was founded by Solomon R. Guggenheim – it deals with collecting modern art works. The idea for museum was proposed by this man who grew up in a wealthy American family. He had entrepreneurships in the USA and Switzerland. He studied in Switzerland, and worked in a family company upon graduation. Even though he was successful and reach, he was also interested in art. Prompted by a German noblewoman, he began collecting paintings and sculptures from the 20th century, thus creating a remarkable collection that was a foundation for a modern art museum. Upon finishing construction works in New York, Guggenheim also opened a museum in Bilbao, Spain.

The Guggenheim in New York was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The building was designed to suit its collection of works of art. It is unique and such building cannot be seen elsewhere in the world. The construction works lasted relatively long, almost 15 years, reason for that being constant design changes by the architect. If you would compare the building with any object, the best one would be a snail’s shell, which inspired the architect.

The museum has no exterior decorations because the building itself is unique and spectacular. It was opened in 1959, the collection has over 2.500 art items created by painters and sculptors from the 20th century.
